Picture in Focus: The Mother of God of Sambir by Roman Vasylyk

May is the time of year traditionally devoted to the Virgin Mary. We return to the the West Ukrainian cultural center of Lviv for this week's image of the Mother of Christ by Ukrainian Art Educator and Icon-maker Roman Vasylyk, the first in a month-long series of new Marian art offerings from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Ukrainian Collection. Vasylyk gives us a traditional, yet, modern-styled variation on the Mother of God of Sambir, a wonder working icon of the Madonna and Child, much revered by Ukrainian Greek Catholics, from a city near the Polish border. The brother of a Ukrainian Greek Catholic bishop in the underground church, Vasylyk taught himself icon-making and recognized the coming crisis in the visual arts for Ukrainian Greek Catholics once the church was legalized. He set up a six-year study program at the Lviv National Academy of Arts in 1995 to ensure future sacred-art makers have a hands-on knowledge of everything from traditional panel painting to iconostasis design. Vasylyk joins my listings on the New Iconography of Lviv II page. Pray for Peace in Ukraine. (John Kohan)
