Picture in Focus: The Mother of God by Ivan Dashko

This week's new Marian image from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Ukrainian Collection is a contemporary variation on the historic Byzantine iconographic prototype of the Virgin Who Shows the Way by Ivan Dashko, an artist from the new school of Ukrainian Greek Catholic icon-making in the West Ukrainian city of Lviv. Dashko parts company with fellow art-makers who are experimenting with modernist styling to take inspiration from icon-makers of the 15th-16th century, considered to be the golden age of Ukrainian sacred art. In Dashko's icon of the Mother of God, just added to the New Iconography of Lviv II page in the Schools of Sacred Art section, the rounded form of the Virgin's face, the garments painted in bold, contrasting reds, blues and yellows and the simple outlines in rhythmic patterns are typical of Galician icons from the golden age. As Dashko explains: “Having such a strong tradition motivates me to spread and develop it.” Pray for Peace in Ukraine! (John Kohan)
