In this month devoted to African American art, I've added a new lithograph to the image gallery of Printmaker Ruth Starr Rose's profile page in the Sacred Artists section. A longtime resident of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Rose was not, herself, a black artist, but she sought to promote better racial understanding through a series of lithographs in the 1940s, illustrating famous African-American spirituals, believing music was a key to overcoming ethnic and cultural differences. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is one of five graphic pieces by Rose on black religious musical themes in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection. (John Kohan)
