Artist in Profile: Dora Maar (1907-1997)

On Bastille Day, I'm continuing my theme of all things French and have just posted a profile of Dora Maar in the Sacred Artists section. Maar is best known as the model, mistress, and muse of Super Star Pablo Picasso. Her cubist-deformed features appear on two of the most expensive paintings ever sold at auction, and she has been nicknamed "The Weeping Woman" for her association with paintings Picasso made about war-torn Spain and her tempetuous emotional life with the unfaithful artist. It may surprise website visitors to learn Maar was also a gifted maker of sacred art, who found God and a deep religious faith in the years after Picasso. The Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection recently acquired four ink portraits of Christ, made by Maar in the latter years of her life. Given her flamboyant past in French Surrealist circles and her years under the influence of Picasso, these are surprisingly intimate, minimalist, and mystical pieces. (John Kohan)
