This heavenly being stands before the Presence of God, both guarding and inviting us into the mystical realm of contemplative silence. The angel's countenance is dark, suggesting the deep mysteries of intimacy with God, described, most famously, by an English medieval mystic as "The Cloud of Unknowing." The crossed hands symbolize the silence of the heart, which must follow the silence of the lips and mind, if we are to hear the authentic Word of God. This is a multi-layered image for meditation.
