Two new angel prints have been added to the East European Ex Libris page of the Schools of Sacred Art Section. They remind us that God's heavenly messengers to planet earth are not just guardians who watch over us. They also have a mission at the End of Time to execute divine judgment on wayward humanity, an event described with harrowing, apocalyptic imagery in Revelation, the last book of the Bible. Czech Graphic Artist Vladimir Suchanek's small format lithograph shows the Angel of the First Trumpet, mentioned in Revelation 8:7, who sends down hail and fire, mixed with blood, burning up a third of the earth. In Russian Printmaker Konstantin Kalynovych's etching/aquatint, we see the Angel of the Second Trumpet in Revelation 8:8, who turns a third of the sea to blood with a blast of the horn. These majestic, winged beings are far removed from the cute and cuddly cherubs of popular kitsch art! (John Kohan)
