Picture in Focus: Cross of Adoration by Marie Romero Cash

Traditional imagery of the Crucifixion often depicts grieving angels, hovering in the skies above the dying Christ. New Mexican Saintmaker Marie Romero Cash offers a strikingly different, decorative variation on this time-honored artistic convention in her Cross of Adoration, a new addition to the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection now on view in the gallery of her Sacred Artist profile page. In a beautifully symmetrical pattern, resembling lacework or the petals of a flower, 27 interlocking angel faces with wings enclose the central image of the Crucified Christ. The hosts of heaven seem to look on in wonder and adoration at the mystery of God's redeeming love for fallen humanity. The cross is also decorated with medallions of the Virgin Mary, her heart pierced with a sword; the Apostle John, who also stood at the foot of the Cross; and God the Father in heaven. (John Kohan)
