Pictures in Focus: Two Angel Woodcuts by Jose Francisco Borges

My last new offerings of angel art are two delightful woodcuts by Brazilian Printmaker Jose Francisco Borges, now on view in the gallery of the Brazilian cordel woodcuts page in the Schools of Sacred Art section. Angels have an important role to play in the cosmology of Brazil's rugged Northeastern "backcountry," where battles between the forces of good and evil are a staple of the local folk tales and ballads, which find their way into the "string literature," sold at regional markets and fairs. Borges has created these two celestial messengers in the rustic style of "string literature" woodcut illustrations. One angel in red, flies off on a nightime mission, a cross and sash flapping in the breeze. Another monochrome angel in decorative dress folds his hands in prayer. The fancy headdress is an interesting addition to angel iconography!  (John Kohan)
