Picture in Focus: St. Francis Prayer Plaque by La Semilla de Dios Workshop

My series on new images of St. Francis of Assisi in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection by folk artists of the Americas comes to an end this week with a wood panel painting made in La Semilla de Dios Workshop in La Palma, El Salvador. This village in the mountainous north of the Central American nation has become identified worldwide with a distinctive style of  brightly-colored, stylized imagery suggesting both Picasso abstracts and ancient Mayan pictographs. This week's featured piece from the first art cooperative to be set up in the village in 1977 shows an ecstatic Francis surrounded by birds, blossoms, butterflies, and beasts. The multi-colored inscription at the bottom of the panel--LORD, MAKE ME AN INSTRUMENT OF YOUR PEACE--is the opening line of a much-loved prayer, attributed to the Saint from Assisi. This new painted wood piece with a Franciscan theme joins others in the gallery of the Salvadoran Wood Paintings page in the Schools of Sacred Art section. (John Kohan)
