Picture in Focus: Westraven Cloisonne Tile of the Madonna and Child

May is the time of year to remember the Virgin Mary. During the next four weeks, I will be presenting new images of the Mother of Christ from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection in an eclectic mix of styles and media by international artists, underscoring the global popularity of Marian-themed sacred art. My first offering is an image of Mary as Queen of Heaven with the crowned Baby Jesus on a ceramic tile, created by an unknown Dutch artisan at the Westraven factory in Utrecht. It was made in a low-relief, cloisonne style, a line of pottery discontinued in 1977, making these beautifully crafted pieces desired collectibles. This new ceramic depiction of the Madonna and Child can be found in the gallery of the Dutch cloisonne tiles page in the Schools of Sacred Art section. (John Kohan)
