Picture in Focus: Handkerchief of Veronica by Sadao Watanabe

I have yet a third image of the Veil of Veronica face of Jesus from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection to present this week. It comes from an usual source--Japanese Printmaker Sadao Watanabe. The leading Japanese Christian artist of the 20th century found faith through a church founded by American Protestant missionaries and the overwhelming majority of his sacred art prints illustrate biblical themes. This week's image on crushed momigami paper from 1967 is one of the rare examples of Watanabe depicting a story from Roman Catholic tradition not found in the Scriptures. We see the miraculous portrait of Christ with crown of thorns and halo rendered in Watanabe's part-Asian, part Medieval-Western style, framed in a white and black edged rectangle suggesting the towel (or handkerchief) Veronica used to wipe the face of Jesus as he carried the cross to Golgotha. The crumpled, textured paper on which the hand-colored image is printed only heightens the impression of viewing a piece of cloth  This new stencil print of Christ's Passion can be viewed on the Sadao Watanabe profile page in the Sacred Artists section.
