Picture in Focus: Jesus Never Fails Plaque with Warner Sallman Head of Christ

We leave politics and current affairs behind and enter the world of commerce with this week's new face of Jesus from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection. The conservative Protestant faith community where I grew up frowned on holy relics, but this faux wood, bakelite plaque with a reproduction of Warner Sallman's famous Head of Christ fills that kind of niche for nostalgic Baby-Boomers of a similar church background to mine. The three-quarter profile of a Nordic-featured Jesus with Hollywood publicity shot backlighting that American Commercial Artist Sallman made in 1940 for the Kriebel & Bates publishing company has become the must successfully marketed portrait of Christ on the planet, reproduced, at least, a half billion times on everything from coffee mugs to wall clocks! In the variation now on view on the Warner Sallman profile page in the Sacred Artists section, this much-loved face of Jesus appears next to "words of comfort" taken from the King James Version of the Gospel of John. A banner below reads, JESUS NEVER FAILS, the title of a chorus popular in the Fundamentalist Christian circles of my childhood. (John Kohan)
