Week Thirty-Eight: The Second Trumpet by Konstantin Kalynovych

Russian-Ukrainian Printmaker Konstantin Kalynovych is, without doubt, the most angelic-minded artmaker in my listings. My featured image this week of the hosts of heaven from the on-line Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection is one of nine bookplates with depictions of angels to be found in the gallery of the Kalynovych profile page, this time, presented as an agent of divine justice. Decked out in the peacock feathers and intricate brocade of the angels of Northern Renaissance Master Jan van Eyck, this apocalyptic messenger puckers his lips to blast the Second Trumpet, mentioned in Revelation 8:8, which sends a flaming mountain (with a human profile!) hurtling down into the sea.
