Week Forty-Six: The Annunciation by Ulyana Tomkevych

There have been many surprise encounters with schools of sacred art, new to me, during the past decade of collecting. One of the most exciting discoveries came three years ago, when I uncovered a treasure trove of contemporary icons on the website of the ICONART Contemporary Sacred Art Gallery in Lviv, Ukraine. This week's image of the Annunciation is by Ulyana Tomkevych, one of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic artists associated with ICONART who are pushing the boundaries of a very conservative sacred art form in their use of unconventional coloring, decorative motifs drawn from folk art, and modernist-influenced compositions. Many of the iconographic elements you expect to find in Annunciation scenes are here, but they have been given new vitality by subtle changes like the horizontal patterned effect created by the compressed angel wings. For more examples visit the New Iconography of Lviv page in the Schools of Sacred Art section. (John Kohan)
