Week Forty-Nine: Nativity Set by Eckart Henzler

All art collectors face the problem of where to set limits. I strayed from my original intentions during the past ten years in looking for nativity scenes, which are the sole focus of many fine collections. There are so many splendid handmade pieces by international artisans the temptation proved too great to resist! German Woodworker Eckart Henzler creates “tree truck books” with pop-out Nativity figures in a sleek, minimalist style from single log blocks found in the forests near his home in Northern Bavaria, carefully preserving the grain of his material in his finished ensembles. In the hand-carved marbled beech wood crèche in the Gollection, Henzler has tied together three rough-hewn “pages” that fold out, accordion-style, to form the backdrop for a traditional manger scene with Mary, Joseph, the Baby Jesus, the Shepherds, the Three Kings, and a host of critters, which can be fitted back into holes in the panels for safe-keeping. It joins a treasure trove of other Christmas displays in the Nativity Sets and Scenes page in the Sacred Schools of Art Section. (John Kohan)
