Picture in Focus: Veronica Wipes the Face of Christ by an Unknown Ethiopian Artist

This Lenten season has taken on a different meaning for all of us who have withdrawn from our normal activities until the threat of the current viral pandemic has passed. This imposed quiet time offers the opportunity to enter more deeply into the mysteries of the Passion of Christ, perhaps, by focusing on works of art. We follow Jesus this week along the Way of Sorrow to Calvary. In the traditional image cycle of the Stations of the Cross, a moment comes when a pious women of Jerusalem breaks through the barrier of physical separation to console the suffering Savior in an act of mercy, wiping the blood, sweat, and tears from his face with a towel on which a miraculous image appears. This woman, known as Veronica, displays with awe and wonder the imprint of that Holy Face in this week's featured artwork by an unknown Ethiopian artisan, joining numerous images of the Crucifixion in the gallery of the Ethiopian icons page in the Schools of Sacred Art section.
