Picture in Focus: The Possessed by Fritz Eichenberg

Next in our series on images of Jesus the Healer in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection is a wood engraving  from German-American Graphic Artist Fritz Eichenberg, depicting one of the most dramatic stories in the Gospels, when Jesus exorcises a legion of evil spirits from a demon-possessed man and casts them into a herd of swine, which throw themselves into the sea. Eichenberg was a noted illustrator of classic works of 19th Century Russian literature and created this image for Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel, The Possessed, about a gang of nihilist revolutionaries who wreak havoc in a provincial Russian town. The title was inspired by the story of Christ's encounter with the demoniac. Dostoyevsky believed his homeland was in need of an exorcism of atheistic ideologies from the West that were threatening Holy Mother Russia. While the demon-possessed swine race madly to their doom, Christ sits with the restored man against the backdrop of the domes of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. This print joins other book illustrations on the Fritz Eichenberg page in the Sacred Artists section. (John Kohan)
