Picture in Focus: Prints from Miserere by Georges Rouault

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, I will be showcasing new works in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection by Georges Rouault, who we remember this year on the 150th anniversary of his birth. The French artist holds a very special place in my own art history. In acquiring his oil painting of Christ et docteur, I made my first plunge into serious collecting. His biosketch was one of the first entries in my on-line Sacred Artists section, so, an update is only fitting in his celebratory year. In addition to new material, I am adding new works to the Rouault image gallery, beginning with two aquatints from the artist's monumental art portfolio, Miserere, commissioned in 1916 by Modern Art Impresario Ambroise Vollard and published in 1948. They are the alpha and omega of this sweeping print series on human suffering and divine compassion. The opening plate shows Christ humiliated with a plea for mercy from the Psalms. The final print presents a thorn-crowned portrait of Christ, invoking the Song of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah. (John Kohan)
