Picture in Focus: Coucher de soleil from Stella Vespertina by Georges Rouault

Georges Rouault reflected on his life as an artist in a preface, composed in the style of Pascal's Pensees, to Stella Vespertina, a portfolio of 12 heliogravures of original gouache and oil sketches published in 1947. As always, Rouault pushed the limits of the printing process by mixing techniques to enhance the quality of the reproductions, sometimes making changes by hand directly on the photographic plates. The theme of the evening star is reflected in four scenes of sunset and moon rise. We catch glimpses, once again, of fellow-travelers on the road in this week's featured print of the setting sun from the Stella Vespertina suite, the last in my series of new Rouault works in the on-line Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection.
