This week's new Marion image from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Ukrainian Collection by Ukrainian Greek Catholic Artist Hlafira Shcherbak offers a contemporary variation on the ancient Byzantine prototype of the Virgin of the Sign, where the Virgin Mary reveals the infant Jesus in her womb. The image is paired here with an icon of Christ the Ruler of All in a diptych of similar rounded panels, where what looks like a abstract autumnal forest above Christ appears below the Virgin Mary in the companion piece. A fellow graduate with the new women icon-makers from the Sacred Art Department at the Lviv National Academy of Arts, Shcherbak has her own distinctive style. She applies contrasting colors with unconventional brush strokes and uses white space and defining outlines in creative ways. Pray for Peace in Ukraine! (John Kohan)
