Picture in Focus: Descent of the Holy Spirit by Kateryna Kuziv

My series on new Marian images from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Ukrainian Collection comes to an end this week with an icon celebrating the Feast of Pentecost on May 28th. The Book of Acts tells how Mary was gathered with the followers of Christ when the Holy Spirit descended upon them in a mighty gust of wind with tongues of fire.  Kateryna Kuziv from the new iconographers of Lviv follows a prototype of Eastern Orthodox Pentecost imagery, where the Mother of Christ is at the center of the group of disciples who receive the divine gift promised by Christ.  Tongues of fire appear above their heads. The Virgin Mary has none, since she is depicted in a popular Marian motif from the Hebrew Scriptures as the unconsumed, burning bush, set aflame by God. In Kuziv's minimalist icons, divine activity in the human realm is represented by broad brush strokes of blue, suggesting, here, the mighty wind at Pentecost. Pray for Peace in Ukraine! (John Kohan)
