Picture in Focus: St. Peter and the Fish by Bohuslav Reynek

If Bohuslav Reynek had not been a gifted printmaker, he would still be honored by Czechs as one of their most important poets of the modern era. Like Jaroslav Vodrazka, the artist-poet's life was determined by history. A recognized author in his homeland, Reynek settled for a time in France, married a French writer, held his first public art exhibition, then, made the fateful decision in 1936 to return to Czechoslovakia and his inherited family estate. The Reynek manor house was taken from him twice--first, by Nazi occupation forces, and later, by the Communist regime. He would spend the last quarter century of his life as a state worker on his own land, tending sheep and goats by day, making detailed prints by candlelight at night. During the Prague Spring, Reynek briefly enjoyed public acclaim, before ending his days in isolation. In his richly-toned, expressionistic etchings and drypoints, we glimpse the world through the eyes of a contemplative, uncovering divine intimations in everyday things. In this week's addition to the Reynek gallery, the Apostle Peter stares in wonder at a fish, perhaps, the one caught at Christ's command with a coin in its mouth for the temple tax or in the miraculous draught of fishes.
