Man. Woman. Child. Animal. These four universal motifs all come together in art about the Flight into Egypt, offered in two contrasting styles in my picks this week on the theme from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection. Cypriot Icon-maker Charalambos Epaminonda presents the post-Christmas story in a neo-Byzantine manner where the donkey looking out at us seems more confident of the way ahead than the hesitant Joseph, who turns his head back for guidance from the guardian angel, urging the Holy Family onward. In the mist-shrouded distance, we see a lone wanderer with a bundle on his shoulder, another displaced person taking to the road. London-born Irish Artist Brian Whelan is known for his biblical scenes, mixing the cosmic and the comic. In the second stylized rendering of the Gospel narrative, Mary and the Baby Jesus are incidental players in danger of being blown away in the jet stream of the angel who flies before them. Joseph strides ahead in a robe of vivid red with grim determination in his blazing eyes, holding the reins of the equally sure-footed donkey. Many are the variations down the centuries of this deceptively simple imagery with its multiple layers of meaning! (John Kohan)
